Programme to attend Euripides' tragedy "Iphigenia in Aulis" at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus

PROGRAMME

TO ATTEND THE TRAGEDY OF EURIPIDES

“IPHIGENIA IN AULIS”

FRIDAY 19 AUGUST 2022

19/08/2022 – Friday: Departure from Kolokotroni Square at 18:30 p.m. to arrive at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus and attend the tragedy of Euripides “Iphigenia in Aulis”. In the tragedy Iphigenia in Aulis, the central heroine dies for a futile and disastrous expansionist war. A society in decline sacrifices Iphigenia, who embodies an entire generation of young people. After twenty years of Peloponnesian War, Euripides seems to wonder: is a change of paradigm possible? Two and a half thousand years later and as we face the first signs of a dystopian future, we still wonder: is it possible for things to change? Themis Moumoulidis creates a performance that reflects on the past, present and future, using as a vehicle the new translation of the work by Panagiota Pantazi. The performance features a complete musical work by composer Stavros Gasparatos, who is inspired by the figure of Iphigenia, creating a parallel, personal narrative, in dialogue with the direction. The play starts at 21:00 p.m. and after its completion we return to Tripoli.
