The Saint Gervasius the Granitsiotis (†30 June 1964) is a great Athonite figure of the 20th century, born in the mountainous village of Nymfasia Gortynias Arcadia, formerly known as Granitsa. This is a modern ascetic person who combined deep asceticism with missionary work and educational action. He was born in 1877 in Nymfasia Arcadia and his worldly name was Georgios Paraskevopoulos. From a young age, he had a strong spiritual inclination and thirst for knowledge and prayer. He became a monk at Mount Athos and later a priest with the name Gervasius. He became known as Elder Gervasius the Granitsiotis and was the abbot of the Holy Monastery of Saint Andrew in Karyes (Mount Athos) for many years. He stood out for his prayer life, fasting, kindness and discernment, and had students and spiritual children all over Greece. He fell asleep in the Lord on 30 June 1964, at the age of 87. The Church of Greece officially ranked him among the locally venerated Saints, and every year his birthplace Nymfasia honours him on 9-10 August, with Sacred Services and a popular pilgrimage. In Nymfasia, there is a bust of the Saint and his house has been converted into a space of honour and pilgrimage. They often call him “Elder of love and simplicity”, as he embodied the ethos of the great fathers of Mount Athos in a lively and down-to-earth way.
