TRIP TO THE HOLY MONASTERY OF PANAGIA KATAKRYMMENI (PORTOKALOUSAS)
Programme
We depart from Tripoli at 16.00 for one of the most historic and devout pilgrimages in Peloponnese: the Holy Monastery of Panagia Katakekrymmeni, known as Portokaloussa, built literally inside the rock of Larisa in Argos. This unique natural location, carved into the reddish stone, creates an impressive and at the same time deeply spiritual image.
We will attend the vespers of the day after the feast and the procession of the miraculous icon.
The history of the Monastery dates back to the Byzantine era, with testimonies placing it as early as the 12th century. According to tradition, the miraculous icon of Panagia was found inside a cavity of the rock, "hidden", protected from the dangers of the time - a fact that gave the Monastery its name. The nickname "Portokaloussa" is probably due to the characteristic orange color of the rocks that surround the monastery.
During the Turkish occupation, the Monastery operated as a refuge for fighters and a place of support for the inhabitants of Argos. Its location, inaccessible and protected, made it a point of safety but also spiritual strengthening. In its premises, cells carved into the rock, old walls and testimonies of centuries of monastic life are preserved.
The icon of Panagia, particularly honored, is considered miraculous and attracts a multitude of pilgrims, especially on the day of the Entry of the Theotokos.
During our visit, we will have time for pilgrimage, sightseeing tour in the unique space that "hangs" over Argos and enjoyment of the unique view towards the Argolic plain.
After the pilgrimage, we will make a stop for coffee or food in Argos or Nafplio (you choose so I can adjust). Return to Tripoli in the afternoon.
