A Few Historical Facts about the Holy Monastery of Panagia Kolokotronis
The Holy Monastery of Panagia Kolokotronis, also known as Agia Moni, is dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos and is first mentioned in 1322, in a chrysobull of Andronikos Palaiologos.
During the Turkish occupation, the Monastery was destroyed and remained in ruins. In 1803, Theodoros Kolokotronis, passing by the ruins of the Monastery, made a vow to Panagia to rebuild it if the struggle for the liberation of the homeland was successful. Indeed, in 1823, fulfilling his vow, he funded the reconstruction of the Monastery. The katholikon of the Monastery is stone-built, in a parallelogram shape, and belongs to the type of a single-aisled basilica. Above the vaulted entrance there is an inscription with the name of Theodoros Kolokotronis, while to the left of it, slabs and architectural members have been embedded, which were transported from the ancient theatre of Megalopolis.
The Monastery celebrates every year on August 15, the day of the Dormition of the Theotokos, attracting a multitude of faithful.
