Holy Tuesday – Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Makrysi Megalopolis

On Holy Tuesday afternoon, we will take a trip to the Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Makrisia, near Megalopolis.

We will attend the Orthros of Holy Wednesday, one of the most solemn services of Holy Week, with a central message of repentance and forgiveness.

The focus of the service is the famous Troparion of Kassiani, one of the most beautiful and theologically rich troparia of our hymnography.

In poetic and profound language, it depicts the crushing of the soul, the awareness of sin, and the hope of divine forgiveness:

«Lord, the woman who had fallen into many sins…»

This service is not just a reminder of an event, but an invitation to every person to turn inward, to recognize their mistakes, and to seek God's mercy.

This is why it is considered one of the most moving moments of Holy Week, where poetry, theology, and prayer come together in a unique way.

The Troparion of Kassiani was written by Kassiani the Hymnographer (or Kassia), one of the most important figures of Byzantine hymnography.

She was a nun, a learned woman, and a poet of the 9th century who lived in Constantinople. She stood out for her theological training and poetic style, leaving behind significant work in ecclesiastical hymnography.

The troparion that bears her name is considered her most famous work and is a supreme example of Byzantine poetry, combining deep theology with intense emotional expression.

The Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Makrisia is located a short distance from Megalopolis in Arcadia, in a quiet and lush environment, and is an important place of worship for the wider area.

The Monastery is dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos and its katholikon was built in 1883, as evidenced by an inscription preserved in the church. Although it is a monastery of more recent times, tradition states that an older place of prayer existed in the same location, a fact that shows the timeless spiritual significance of the place.

Architecturally, the catholic is simple and lightweight, in the rhythm of a monoclite basilica, with a remarkable wooden carving and images that reflect the religious art of the time. In the place of the monastery the monastic cells, auxiliary buildings and small chapels are developed, with the most famous one of the Holy Fancy.

Over the years, the monastery has served as a reference point for the inhabitants of the area, especially in times of difficulty, and to this day it gathers the faithful, especially during the great holidays and the Great Week.

Today it operates as The female monasteryKeeping the monastic tradition alive and offering a place of tranquility, prayer and inner peace.

The simplicity of the landscape, the quietness and the sense of isolation it offers, make the Monastery of Makrisio a special destination for pilgrimage, but also for a short escape near nature.
