📜 HISTORICAL & CULTURAL ELEMENTS
Holy Monastery of Saint Theodosius the New – Nafplio (Panaritis)
🕰️ Foundation and early history
The Holy Monastery of Saint Theodosius was founded in 880 AD by the monk and ascetic Osios Theodosius the New, who lived and practiced asceticism in the area of Panaritis, Argolis. According to tradition, he dedicated his life to prayer and spiritual exercise, attracting people who sought spiritual guidance.
After his death (around 922 AD), the monastery was deserted for a period, as the continued life of the community depended heavily on the physical presence and work of its founder.
🏛️ Renewal and later history
In the early 16th century, the monastery was refounded and began to operate again as a monastic organization. During the period of Venetian rule, the property and facilities of the monastery passed for a time into the care of the Venetophile family of Chortatsis, a fact that shows its importance and residential influence in the wider area. In 1835, with the establishment of the Greek state, this property came under state control and the monastery was preserved as a historical and religious monument.
🛕 Structure and architecture
The catholicon (main church) of the monastery dates back to the Byzantine period, and is the central point of the complex. Inside and around it, there are elements that reveal the repeated interventions and renovations over the centuries. The visitor can see traditional monastic cells, chapels and architectural elements that reflect the historical continuity of the place.
✝️ Operation and significance today
From 1942 onwards, the monastery operates as a women's monastic community, with the nuns continuing the rich spiritual and philanthropic work of the monastery. The unique services, the penitent liturgies and the possibility of personal pilgrimage make it an important pilgrimage for believers of all ages.
🌿 Religious tradition and worship
The monastery is particularly honored by the locals and not only, as Saint Theodosius is considered a miraculous Saint, while the location of the monastery offers a sense of calmness and spiritual uplift, ideal for participating in liturgies such as the Salutations of Panagia.
